The Ministry of Agriculture is monitoring the situation in the Russian-Ukrainian war and will take the necessary steps immediately if necessary, the ministry wrote on Friday.

According to the statement, the Minister of Agriculture István Nagy stated that the aim of the government is still to ensure the uninterrupted supply of food to the population, the conditions necessary for agricultural production, animal husbandry, and food production, and the services providing production.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture said that we have trade with Ukraine that does not significantly affect the domestic food supply, so there are no supply difficulties due to the war situation there. He explained that we import flax seeds, sorghum seeds, honey, and fodder from Ukraine, for example.

The Minister emphasized

however, the indirect effect of the war can be expected to increase the price of cereals on the world market, for example, which could also affect Hungary.

The Minister of Agriculture also spoke about the fact that the Ministry monitors the longer-term effects on certain agricultural sectors (such as seed production and marketing, or feed), and examines possible indirect problems on an ongoing basis. “We ask professional associations to report any difficulties or problems to us. Of course, in justified cases, as has been the case in previous difficult situations, we will take the necessary steps immediately, he added.

István Nagy reminded that in connection with Hungarian food production it has been proven several times that it is a strong, stable sector, able to successfully overcome obstacles. “In recent years, the government has spent billions on the development of Hungarian agriculture, which, among other things, contributes to ensuring a safe and continuous food supply in Hungary,” he said in a statement.
